Trauma Awareness Training

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Please join us on Wednesday, November 17th for a training around Trauma Awareness.  The training will take place in the Knoch Middle School Library at 6:30 p.m. or via Google Meets (see login information below) and is open for all families in the district.  The goal of this training is to educate and help families and caregivers have a deeper understanding of trauma and the impact it has on the lives of our students.

Dr. Bessel van der Kolk defines trauma as "An event that overwhelms the central nervous system, altering the way we process and recall memories".  This can include numerous situations and scenarios that are different for every person and student.  There are various situations and types of trauma including, but not limited to (abuse, traumatic grief, natural disasters, domestic violence, medical traumas, COVID etc.).  Trauma impacts each person differently and what may not be traumatic for one person can be considered trauma for another.

Learning Objectives for the Trauma Training

  • Identify Various Types of Trauma
  • What are Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
  • How ACEs can interfere with a child's development and functioning
  • Common experiences and reactions to trauma
  • How to foster resilience in traumatized youth
  • Ways to support children who have been exposed to trauma

We look forward to seeing you there!
