2nd Grade Learns About Conservation

While learning about Living Things in Science Mrs. Rush's and Miss Achezinski's classes had an enrichment distance learning lesson provided by the Keystone Elk Country Alliance at the Elk County Visitor Center in Benezette, PA.    Ben Porkolab, the Conservation Education Coordinator, and Victoria Chillingsworth, the Conservation Education Specialist, taught a lesson using video conferencing and also sent a trunk containing items for a hands-on experience for the students.  They taught us about the history of elk in the US and PA and the relationship between deer and elk. This lesson coordinated perfectly with our lessons on woodland animals like deer, along with what they eat, their habitat, and how they use camouflage for protection.
To facilitate the lesson, they sent elk pelt, elk antler, elk and deer jaw bone, elk and deer shoulder bone, elk skull, and a radio collar.
